  1. Water recycling

    A closed-loop washing circuit, because a water treatment supplier that wastes water has no argument to make.

    Washing is the most water-intensive stage of the process. Rather than draw fresh water continuously and discharge the slurry, wash water passes through settling ponds where fines drop out, and the clarified water returns to the circuit. Make-up water covers evaporation and the moisture leaving with the product, not the process itself.

    What this means in practice

    • Settling ponds sized for the full wash circuit, desilted on a planned cycle
    • Recovered fines diverted to construction grades rather than to a spoil heap
    • No process discharge to watercourses or groundwater
  2. Dust control

    Respirable crystalline silica is an occupational health hazard, and it is managed as one.

    Dry processing generates respirable dust at every transfer point. Control is engineered rather than delegated to protective equipment: enclosed conveying, extraction and filtration at screening and packing, water suppression on haul roads, and covered storage. Respiratory protection is the last layer, not the first.

    • Enclosed conveying and extraction at screening and packing points
    • Water suppression on internal haul roads and stockpiles
    • Scheduled exposure monitoring with mandatory RPE in dry-process areas
  3. Energy efficiency

    Drying is where the energy goes, so that is where the effort goes.

    Rotary drying dominates the site's energy demand. Every percentage point of moisture removed mechanically before the dryer is energy that is never spent as heat — which is why dewatering screen performance is treated as an energy control, not just a process one.

    What this means in practice

    • Mechanical dewatering maximised ahead of thermal drying
    • Variable-speed drives on screening and conveying
    • Load scheduling to avoid unnecessary idle running of the dryer
  4. Land rehabilitation

    Worked areas are restored progressively, not at the end of the concession.

    Progressive restoration means backfilling and re-contouring worked faces as extraction moves on, rather than leaving an open void for the life of the licence. It costs more per tonne in the short term and considerably less in total.

    What this means in practice

    • Backfilling and contouring of worked faces on a rolling basis
    • Overburden retained on site for restoration rather than disposed of
  5. Community

    The plant sits in someone's community, and operates accordingly.

    Most of the workforce is drawn from the surrounding area, and most of the disruption a quarry creates — dust, noise, heavy vehicles — lands on the same people. Haulage is routed away from village roads, and residents have a standing channel to raise concerns rather than having to escalate through the authority.

    • Local hiring prioritised for operational and maintenance roles
    • Haulage routed to avoid village roads and school hours
    • Direct channel for residents to raise dust, noise or traffic concerns
