The coarse top layer of a dual-media bed

Filter Anthracite

Low-ash, high-carbon anthracite graded for dual and multimedia filters. Its lower density lets it sit above silica sand after backwash, giving depth filtration and longer runs between washes.

Overview

In a single-media sand filter, most solids are captured in the top few centimetres and head loss climbs quickly. Adding a coarser, lighter anthracite layer above the sand converts the bed to depth filtration: larger floc is caught in the anthracite, finer particles in the sand below. In practice this typically extends filter runs by 50–100% at the same influent quality.

Grading matters as much as the material. Anthracite that is too fine will intermix with the sand; too coarse and it passes floc straight through. We supply it matched to your existing sand gradation so the two layers stratify cleanly after every backwash.
