Chloride purity, and insolubles that stay out of your process

Industrial Grade Salt

Washed and dried sodium chloride at ≥ 98% NaCl for chlor-alkali feedstock, brine systems, textile dyeing, drilling fluids and bulk regeneration. Specified on insolubles and on calcium–magnesium as much as on chloride, because those are what show up downstream.

  • Manufactured to: EN 973 (regeneration use)

Overview

The headline NaCl figure is the least useful number on an industrial salt specification. What determines whether the salt causes you trouble is the hardness it carries: calcium and magnesium precipitate in membrane cells, foul ion exchange resin and scale evaporators. A 98% salt with clean Ca+Mg is worth more in a chlor-alkali plant than a 99% salt that brings hardness with it.

The uses are unrelated to each other and each reads the specification differently. Chlor-alkali wants hardness and sulphate low. Textile dyeing wants rapid, complete dissolution for salting-out. Drilling fluids want density and shale inhibition, and tolerate a coarser, cheaper grade. Bulk water softening wants insolubles low, because everything insoluble ends up on the resin.

The material is kiln dried to ≤ 0.5% moisture, which is what makes it behave in a silo and move through pneumatic conveying without bridging the hopper. Salt that arrives damp will find the one part of your handling system that cannot cope with it.

For regenerating a domestic or light commercial softener, buy the tablets instead — they exist because granular salt bridges in a small brine tank. This grade is the economical choice when the brine system is engineered to dissolve granular salt and the volumes justify it.
