Dual-media pre-treatment filters for a seawater reverse osmosis train, specified to hold SDI₁₅ below 3 at the membrane inlet.
Membrane fouling on a seawater train is expensive and slow to reverse, so the consultant specified a tighter acid solubility limit than the standard grade. Media that dissolves in service shifts the gradation and lets fines reach the membranes.
Dual-media beds of 0.8–1.6 mm anthracite over 0.8–1.6 mm silica sand, with acid solubility verified per lot against the tighter limit rather than the EN 12904 ceiling. Certificates were issued per layer for the submittal pack.
Pre-treatment held SDI₁₅ within specification through commissioning and the first operating season.
