Acid solubility measures the mass fraction of media that dissolves in hydrochloric acid under controlled conditions. It sounds like an obscure laboratory number. It is actually a durability test, and it predicts a specific and expensive failure mode.
Silica itself is essentially inert. What dissolves is the carbonate and clay content that came with it out of the ground and survived washing. In service, that fraction leaves the grain slowly. Three things follow.
- The gradation shifts. Grains lose mass, the effective size drifts, and the bed no longer matches the design it was commissioned against.
- Fines are released into the filtrate — the exact particles the filter exists to remove.
- In RO pre-treatment, those fines reach the membranes. Membrane fouling is expensive and slow to reverse.
The reason this failure is hard to diagnose is its timescale. Nothing is wrong at commissioning. Performance degrades over eighteen months to three years, by which point the plant has usually changed coagulant dose two or three times looking for the cause.
